What are some new/returning mechanics in this game?

  • Looplets and emeras are a brand new mechanic. Looplets are held items (the only held items in this game) that have notches on them (the amount of notches varies for each Looplet) that can hold emeras. Many Looplets have their own base effect, and each emera has its own effect as well. A Pokémon holding a Looplet will gain the base effect of the Looplet, as well as the effects of any attached emeras. However, emeras are fleeting – when finding them in dungeons, you must grab them in time before they break, and all emeras disappear upon leaving a dungeon.

  • Mega Evolution is introduced to the series. On top of being much stronger, if a Pokémon is Mega Evolved, they can break through walls. Pokémon who are unable to Mega Evolve can achieve a similar state through the same means (by holding a Looplet with an Awakening emera).

  • Quicksaving in a dungeon is now only possible if you have an item with you called a Progress Device.

  • There is a new way of attacking an enemy while traveling in a group, called an Alliance. Using an Alliance, you can select which move you and your teammates will use, and unleash them all on the enemy at once. Moves that are normally not very effective do neutral damage in an Alliance!

  • You can now set up multiple back-up teams before going into a dungeon. This can be to prepare for your favorite teammates being unavailable, or to set up a team to rescue yourself with (another new option in Super Mystery Dungeon) should you need it.

  • If you walk into a teammate while inside a dungeon, you will push them by default. If you want to switch positions with them like in the past games, you must hold down B while doing so. You can also push enemies if you walk into them while holding B.
